Caribou

Structural & Behavioral Adaptations

Structural 1:  This herbivore has two layers of insulating fur. Even though it may be warm, it is completely hollow.

Structural 2:  Caribou also have wide hooves, and strong legs to help them swim as fast as 6 miles per hour.

Behavioral 1:  Caribou also migrate to escape the worst of the winter cold.

Behavioral 2:  They hang out in large groups to keep flies off of each other.

Facts:

  • Reindeer and caribou are the same animal (Rangifer tarandus) and are a member of the deer family.
  • Both male and female reindeer grow antlers, while in most other deer species, only the males have antlers.
  • Unlike horns, antlers fall off and grow back larger each year.
