Structural & Behavioral Adaptations
Structural 1: This herbivore has two layers of insulating fur. Even though it may be warm, it is completely hollow.
Structural 2: Caribou also have wide hooves, and strong legs to help them swim as fast as 6 miles per hour.
Behavioral 1: Caribou also migrate to escape the worst of the winter cold.
Behavioral 2: They hang out in large groups to keep flies off of each other.
Facts:
- Reindeer and caribou are the same animal (Rangifer tarandus) and are a member of the deer family.
- Both male and female reindeer grow antlers, while in most other deer species, only the males have antlers.
- Unlike horns, antlers fall off and grow back larger each year.
