Polar Bear

 

Facts:

Scientific name: Ursus maritimus

Speed: 25 mph (Maximum, Adult, Sprint)

Mass: 990 lbs (Beaufort Sea population, Mature), 330 – 550 lbs (Adult)

Height: 5.9 – 7.9 ft. (Adult, On hind legs), 4.4 ft. (Adult, At Shoulder)

Adaptations:

Structural 1:  This carnivorous animal has thick layers of fat and fur to help keep warm in the icy waters and in the thick snow on the land.

Structural 2:  Polar bears also have a greasy  coat that sheds after swimming so they don’t lose heat. 

Behavioral 1:  Denned polar bear does not eat, but relies on her fat reserves to sustain herself and her cubs while in the den.

Behavioral 2:  They are solitary with large hunting ranges due to fierce competition for food.
